Hello Kitty Locker Mirror

School is just around the corner, so I thought a Hello Kitty Locker Mirror might be a fun project to decorate the well-dressed high school Co-ed.

Materials:

  • Color A--Lily Sugar'n Cream, Hot Pink  Color B--Caron Simply Soft, White
  • Color C--Lily's Sugar'n Cream, Hot Green
  • Color D--Lily's Sugar'n Cream, Sunshine
  • H/8 (5.00mm) hook
  • G/6 (4.25mm) hook
  • Krazy Glue
  • 5" diameter Craft Mirror (got mine at Michaels)(look in pattern for variations for different sized mirrors)
  • Cardboard
  •  Steel darning needle
  • Yellow and Black Felt (8x10" squares are available at Michaels or fabric stores)
  • Tacky Glue

Gauge:  For mirror case diameter after 3 rounds is 1 3/4"

Special Stitches
Sc2tog (Single Crochet 2 stitches together) Insert hook in first stitch (st). Yarn over (YO), draw up a loop (lp), 2 lps on hook. Insert hook in next st, YO, draw up a lp.  3 lps on hook.  YO, draw yarn through all three lps on hook.

Mirror Prep

The first thing I wanted to do was make the mirror a little less dangerous, so I decided to glue a piece of cardboard to the back of it.  This way if the mirror cracks it won't shatter all over the place.  We had some old UPS hardpacks laying around so I used it for my cardboard.

Lay the mirror on the cardboard and draw a circle around it close to the edge.

The hardpack has some stickers on the back, so I decided to use it for part of the glue.

I also used some Krazy glue to really make it stick.

Now you're ready to make the mirror case.

Mirror Case Pattern

With H hook and Color A
Rnd 1:  Begin with a Magic Circle, ch 1 crochet 6 scs into circle, sl st into first sc. (6 scs)

Now we start increasing
Rnd 2:  Ch 1, 2 scs per sc, sl st in first sc. (12 scs)

12 scs

Rnd 3:  Ch 1, *1 sc in first sc, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc. (18 scs)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 2 scs, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc. (24 scs)

Hopefully you can see the pattern here.  To make a circle you start with a certain number of sts, then you increase by the same number of sts in each round.  I started with 6 scs, so the rounds increase 6 sts each round.

Rnd 5:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 3 scs, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc. (30 scs)

Rnd 6:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 4 scs , 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc. (36 scs)

Rnd 7:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 5 scs, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc. (42 scs)

Rnd 8:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc.
(48 scs)

Eight Rnds
Eight Rnds diameter = 4 inches
If you are using a 4 inch round mirror go to Row 11

Rnd 9:  Ch1, *1 sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc.
(54 scs)

Rnd 10:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, sl st in first sc.
(60 scs)

If your mirror is bigger than 5 inches, continue adding one stitch per round until the  crocheted circle is the same diameter as the mirror, (i.e. *1 sc in next 9 scs, 2 scs in next sc* 6 times, then 10, 11, etc.) Then go to Rnd 11 (your stitch count will be different of course.)

Rnd 11:  Ch 1, sc in each sc all the way around, sl st in first sc. (60 scs)

Edges will start to curl in
Rnd 12:  Ch 1, *1 sc in each of next 6 scs, sc2tog* 5 times, 1 sc in each of next 4 scs, sc2tog, sl st in first sc. (40 scs)

Rnd 13:  Ch 1, *1 sc in next sc, sc2tog* repeat all the way around, sl st in first sc. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Slide Mirror into cover
Back of mirror cover

Pull the thread through from the edge

Begin to weave the tail through the cover, hiding your sts as much as possible

Pull the tail tight as you st around the mirror

After you have gone all the way around pull the tail through to the back of  your mirror.
The tail is still attached

Hello Kitty Face

Sl st into the pink dc at the end of the hanger loop.  Fasten of leaving a long tail.  Weave the tail back and forth through the hanger loop to strengthen it.  Trim ends.

You can use this image to help you make the eyes nose and whiskers.  I used black felt for the eyes and whiskers and yellow felt for the nose.

You can hang the mirror in your locker using either a suction or a magnetic hook.
