Haute Puppy Coat

I had a request awhile back for a dog sweater.  It took me some time to come up with an idea of how to do it since I don't have a dog.  I do have children though, and I remember how hard it was to pull clothing on over wiggling arms, legs and heads.  I figured a dog wouldn't be any easier to dress, so I decided to have a wrap around, snap on collar and a belt buttoned around the chest for easy dressing.  I also had to look around for dog measurements, so this was another reason for not making a snugly fitting coat.

I found this size chart at Pet It Dog Apparel.  Click here to see how to do the measurements so you know what size to make.  While you're there check out their cute doggy couture.

I have only made size adjustments for small, medium and large dogs.  If your dog is smaller or larger than these sizes, make a square of hounds-tooth pattern for the body of the coat by following the instructions below, just make a chain the same size as your dog's back length (make an odd numbered chain). Make the piece the same width as length to form a square and try to end and begin your rows with the same color.  Make the belt the same length as the girth of your dog (again making an odd numbered chain) and follow the pattern for the belt.  For the collar, make the the beginning ch the same length as the square for the body of the coat, then follow the collar instructions up to Row 12, then you will have to improvise a bit on Row 13, but follow it generally to make the curved part of the shawl.  The belt loop and gusset should be about the same, unless you have changed the width of the belt.

Assembly

Sew one end of the belt to the side of the gusset without the button hole.

Sew a button onto the side of the gusset without the button hole.

Match up the ends of the belt.

Mark the button placement on the belt with a pin.

Where the button will go.

Sew on the button, leaving the yarn loose to make a shank.

Form the shank by wrapping the yarn around the yarn joining the button to the belt.

Once you have wrapped the yarn around, push the needle through to the other side of the belt and weave in the loose ends.

Sew the shawl collar onto the body of the coat, matching up the beginning chain stitching on both pieces.

Sew down on both sides.

Flip the collar over the top of the body of the coat so it stands up.

Sew the belt onto the body of the coat along the top of the belt and the sides of the coat, leaving the bottom belt edge loose.

Sew the white part of the belt loop over the top of the black part.

Sew on a button.

Sew the belt loop on to the coat over the belt.

Sew a snap onto the front of the shawl collar. There are two pieces to the snap, make sure they line up.

Then finished snapped up collar

 The belt fastening.
